RAPID REACTION: DOCTOR WHO S7 TRAILER 26/3/12

<itunes:subtitle>Calvin Peat and Martin Anderson discuss the new Doctor Who S7 trailer...</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary> Earlier today, the BBC released the first trailer for Doctor Who Season 7. Though the show doesn't return to our screens until sometime in the Autumn of 2012, this trailer, like all those before it, spectacularly, infuriatingly, makes us wish it was tomorrow. Perhaps it's all part of the Beeb's cunning strategy to remind us just how slowly time can go without a TARDIS, thus making the escapist, wish-fulfilment nature of the show all the more appealing. At any rate, it's a terrifically edited trailer, showcasing the broad vistas of the American Old West, perhaps building on Doctor Who's burgeoning popularity in the States, following on from Season 6's largely US-set opening two-parter. http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/dw/news/bulletin_120326_01/First_Preview_of_the_New_Series Here at Shadowlocked, we're big fans of Doctor Who (see John Bensalhia's epic, comprehensive series of Complete Doctor Who reviews), and so naturally any item of Doctor Who reviews bears analysis. In a brief discussion of the trailer, Editor-in-Chief Martin Anderson and News Editor Calvin Peat take in subjects as diverse as trailer editing, Star Wars references, Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith, the western genre in SF, and show-runner Steven Moffat. INDEX First impressions of the trailer – 0.35 Doctor Who aiming to appeal to an American audience – 1.06 Star Wars references—Martin and Calvin argue over which specific Star Wars moment the trailer's referencing – 2.42 Matt Smith's tremendous performance in the role of The Doctor – 3.49 The new companion, Jenna-Louise Coleman – 4.56 The western genre—comparisons with Cowboys & Aliens, Star Trek, and Firefly – 6.50 The distinction between mixing and melding genres – 8.48 International filming – 9.51 Final thoughts on the trailer – 11.0 Steven Moffat's tenure as showrunner – 11.55 </itunes:summary>
