Review: Captain America Civil War Hero Clix Starter Set
|OFFWORLD - OTHER|
Richard Cosgrove and the Shadowlocked Gaming Team engage in a spot of Civil War...
Here at Shadowlocked we’re always up for something new, and so when we were offered a review copy of the Captain America Civil War Hero Clix Starter Set (try saying that quickly) we jumped at the chance.
The game itself comes compactly packaged with six gorgeous miniature figures – Iron man, Black Panther, Black Widow, Falcon, Winter Soldier and, of course, Captain America - a rulebook (always useful), a card detailing the powers and abilities of each character, object and terrain tokens, character cards, dice and a two sided map to play the game on – one side being outside the Avenger’s HQ, the other side within the base.
Each of the character figures have a dial on their base that contains their attributes – attack, damage, leadership - and by rotating the dials according to gameplay means that the strengths and weaknesses of the characters are constantly changing and allow you to tactically decide how to use your heroes (or villains, of course) accordingly, for example choosing whether to undertake combat from afar (ranged) or up close and personal.
There are a number of different styles of game you can play, from a reasonably basic set of rules to a somewhat expert game that involves all kinds of variables that will aid or hinder your character depending on factors like terrain.
As a novice to the game, I have to say that there are a daunting amount of rules to initially get to grips with, and if like us you’re new to Hero Clix then you may well find yourself scratching your head initially (or get somebody who already knows the mechanics to explain them to you), but hang in there, as once you’re up and running with the gameplay it all makes sense (a bit like building IKEA furniture).
Overall, the Captain America Civil War Hero Clix Starter Set probably isn’t the best starting place for a beginner gamer, but if you’re an intermediate gamer who’s had experience of combat and RPG gaming, then this is probably worth a go, and if you’re a Hero Clix player to start with then you’re probably already ready to enact your own civil war.
The Captain America Civil War Hero Clix Starter Set retailes for £19.99 and is available from all good Esdevium Games retailers.
(Thanks to Tim at Esdevium games for the review copy.)
