Marvel's Agents of SHIELD casts Amy Acker

Agents of SHIELD adds an Actress of Awesome...

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD casts Amy Acker as The Cellist in Portland

As if the cast of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD wasn't talented enough already, the show just keeps on adding more impressive guest stars, with the likes of Bill Paxton, Adrian Pasdar, and Patton Oswalt still to feature this season. The latest addition is one Amy Acker, in what will be her fifth role in a Joss Whedon production, proving that once you've been in the Whedonverse, you never leave.

Amy Acker will be playing the role of The Cellist in Portland, in at least one episode. Ardent fans will know that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been subtly but steadily building up to her character. Coulson's former romantic interest was mentioned in The Avengers, and then, very deliberately, two or three in Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. Marvel (and Joss Whedon, for that matter) have a habit of setting tiny plot elements into motion, and then bringing them back, often as something much bigger. Given the amount the character has been teased, it's a safe bet that she'll play a significant role, and could well become a recurring character with a hefty arc of her own.

Hopefully, this will be the case, since Amy Acker is essentially perfect for the role; perhaps one of the most perfect castings since Nathan Fillion as Captain Malcolm Reynolds in Firefly. (Though many other Whedonverse castings could give them a run for their money; the man knows how to write characters and cast them well.)

For a start, Amy Acker is one of the most talented and versatile actresses in the Whedonverse. She put in one (okay, arguably more than one) of the best performances in both Angel and Dollhouse, which, considering the sheer combined acting talent of those casts, is no mean feat. In fact, Fred (Winifred Burkle) in Angel is one of the nicest, most loveable characters ever.

In a week where casting news has included the news that Lex Luthor is going to be Winston Churchill, and Sherlock Holmes is going to be Hamlet, neither of those can beat finding out that Fred is going to be The Cellist. Yes, us Whedonites are crazy. But in an adorable way, like Fred.

Considering that some of the best acting in Marvel's Agents of SHIELD has come from former Whedonverse actors (J. August Richards as Mike Petersen, and Ron Glass as Dr. Streiten), fans have every reason to expect that The Cellist will rock. (At least metaphorically, if not literally.)

Interestingly, the name of the character Amy Acker will play is Audrey. This seems somewhat similar to the Portland-based cellist Aubrey Weber, of the band The Doubleclicks, who sang a song about Agent Coulson. It could even be the theme tune to Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, if it included all the main characters. In any case, it's quite catchy.
