Rockstar's acclaimed title makes back its development costs four times over in one day...
The highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto V was released at midnight yesterday, and to no surprise has managed to break the record for highest sales in 24 hours. Distributors Take-Two Interactive have announced that the game has managed to achieve a staggering $800m (£490m) worth of sales within the first day, and is certainly going to break the forecasted $1 billion within the week.
The record was previous held by Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 which made $500m within 24 hours in 2012. The game also holds the title for the quickest entertainment product to achieve $1 billion in sales as they hit the mark by day 15. GTAV is looking to over take this by a considerable amount as it has already been confirmed as the biggest entertainment launch in the UK alone by selling 1.57 million copies on day one.
Take-Two Interactive's chairman and CEO – Strauss Zelnick had this to say in a press conference earlier:
“All of us at Take-Two are thrilled with the initial response of Grand Theft Auto V. Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry's new standard for creativity, innovation and excellence...Beginning at midnight on Monday, consumers around the world gathered in anticipation to be among the first to experience the evolution of this remarkable series. In North America alone, more than 8,300 stores opened their doors at midnight to welcome fans whose loyalty and enthusiasm were rewarded with what the New York Times called 'the most immersive spectacle in interactive entertainment.' We are incredibly proud of Rockstar Games' creative achievement and could not be more pleased with the success of this launch.”
With a 9.8 average score on Metacritic, the latest installment ties with its predecessor GTAIV and is joint highest rated game on Metacritic as a whole – Rockstar North have managed to suppress any fears that they have lost any of their charm and talent in games development.
