NYC Event: TropFest Short Film Festival
| NEWS - MOVIE NEWS |
An Aussie film tradition hits NYC again...

TropFest, the world's largest short film festival, announced today that TropFest NYC would be hosted by Hugh Jackman. TropFest started in Australia 20 years ago, making their choice of a famous Aussie to host the next TropFest NYC a good one, to tie the original TropFest Down Under to the new, expanded-to-the-States version.
TropFest NYC will be a three-day event, from June 21- 23 - the short film competition will be the centerpiece, of course, but festivities will also include music, film, and a filmmaker symposium called "Roughcut". Short films entered in the competition cannot exceed 7 minutes in length, and must include the "TropFest Signature Item" (TSI), an item chosen each year for TropFest to show that the film was made specifically for this festival. This year, the TSI is a bagel. New Yorkers collectively thank TropFest for not choosing a hot dog, the other NYC culinary staple.
The festival will culminate in the film competition, where finalists will be shown on a large screen in NYC's Bryant Park and winners will be chosen by a panel of film industry people as well as celebrities, hosted by Hugh Jackman. Last year's panel included included Nicole Kidman, Geoffrey Rush, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Baz Luhrmann, and Tobey Maguire. TropFest is free, and open to the public, but you may reserve space on their website.
Film submissions are due by May 17, 2012. TropFest NYC will be held on June 21-23, 2012 with the film competition on the 23rd in Bryant Park; entertainment begins at 3:00 and films begin at 8:00 PM.
