'Razzies' set for April Fools' Day

The Razzies. Aka, Uwe Boll's yearly publicity...

The day Uwe Boll took a camera into his hands and thought "Ja...das ist gut" was a sad day for all. With little to no understanding of the cinematic psyche and a convenient German tax law, Boll decided to butcher the legend of many a fine videogame, leaving behind little credibility and a Rotten Tomato rating so low that you'd think he filmed it blindfolded.
With his direct-to-video mindset and minimalist budget Boll was seemingly unstoppable. Fans and critics worldwide pleaded with him to stop, even going as far as to start an online petition after Boll promised to stop should said petition reach a million signatures. And yet here we are, 2012, and Mr. Boll still walks amongst us; worse still, he's still producing films - his latest release, Zombie Massacre, is set for release later in the year. Ironically, it's tag-line is "There is no hope" - a simple phrase that sums up both the feature and the career of its lead producer.
However, thanks to an impromptu dinner and subsequent entertainment, the world welcomed the Golden Raspberry awards in 1981. The brain child of John J.B Wilson, a former publicist and copywriter, the 'Razzies' were designed to draw attention to the worst offenders within film. Actors, actresses, directors - no one was safe from the Razzie's critical eye and as the years progressed so did its success.
Traditionally, the spoof awards has taken place on the night before the Oscars, but in an effort to emphasise its comical stance, its organisers have decided to host the awards on the 1st April, traditionally known as April Fools' Day. In a statement, they said: "John Wilson and Mo Murphy, co-owners of the Razzies, saw a unique opportunity to do something they've wanted to do since their awards were created in 1980: emphasise [its] comedic intent" - and they're certainly set to do that.
Previous winners of awards include Halle Berry for her, erm, dubious performance in Catwoman; M. Night Shyamalan for his painful 2010 release, The Last Airbender; and, in what has to be one of the greatest awards of all time, a "Worst screen couple" for Uwe Boll and any actor, camera or screenplay...horrah!
This year Adam Sandler is expected to 'win big', thanks in part to the horrific monster that was/is Jack and Jill, and organisers have promised to announce the full list of nominees of Oscars Eve, aka the 25th February.
So there we have it - a new date worthy of the events truly comical nature. While many question its validity, one cannot argue its importance - after all, if the Raspberries didn't, who else would mention Uwe Boll?
