Diablo 3 still not confirmed for consoles
|NEWS - VIDEOGAME NEWS|
Despite the rumours, Blizzard still won't say if consoles are getting a new Diablo...
Diablo 3 is a game that is getting people rather excited. DIablo 2 was a huge hit in 2000, winning multiple Game Of The Year awards and even breaking the record for the fastest selling PC game ever (a title previous reserved for World Of Warcraft and its numerous expansions). And with more and more content and information being published, it is starting to look like we might be returning to Tristram pretty soon.
Despite how finished the game is looking, Blizzard haven't actually said when they are going to release it. What's even more confusing is that they haven't even said what you'll be able to play it on. PC is obviously going to be the flagship for the game, as the Diablo series, and most other Blizzard games, are usually a PC only affair. But there has been little to no news on whether or not the PS3 or 360 will be getting a version.
Yesterday however, there were a lot of very excited posts saying that Diablo 3 had indeed been confirmed for consoles, and it was Blizzard themselves that had said so. Oddly though, there was no official announcement from Blizzard directly, just a number of stories claiming that it had been confirmed over Twitter.
It seems like Wired were the first to notice the Tweet from Blizzard responding to a fans question of whether Diablo 3 was coming to consoles, The Blizzard community manager responded with a simple "Yup", adding that there was a lead developer already working on the "console project".
This seemed like pretty conclusive proof until Wired updated their story, stating that they had been contacted directly by Blizzard, who told them that the Tweet was incorrect, and Diablo 3 was still not actually confirmed for the console market.
Which leaves the fans in an interesting situation. While on the surface this could be taken as pretty concrete proof of a console version being produced, and someone just letting it slip early, there is no hint as to what stage of development it is actually at. This is pretty important considering that a few months ago Blizzard told GameInformer that if they were going to build a console game, they would do it "from the ground up".
Aside from the lack of a platform list, the lack of release date is also some cause for alarm. For a while it looked like it was going to be February 1st, as a picture surfaced on the internet showing a BestBuy promotion counting down to the date, and offering Diablo 3 pre-orders. But again, this was swiftly rebuked by Blizzard themselves, stating that the game had no release date, and that anyone offering one was "guessing".
All this conflicting information makes for a confusing situation. It seems like consoles will be getting Diablo 3, but it's likely to be a while off yet. The PC version will be released this year, probably before the summer, but the actual date is anyone's guess, BestBuy's prediction seems much too early though, considering it is less than a month away.
One thing is certain though, whenever it is actually released, and on whatever platforms it is on, Diablo 3 is going to have to be seriously good to live up to all this hype...
