Juan of the Dead: wide release in 2012

NEWS - MOVIE NEWS

Cuba's first feature-length horror film in decades....

Alejandro Brugues' Cuban zombie-comedy, Juan of the Dead, may be shuffling soon into a theater near you! Variety reports that Focus World (the new, digital-distribution arm of Focus Films) has negotiated US releases for 2012. And Juan is on the list!

Juan of the Dead, the first feature-length horror film to come from Cuba in fifty years, chronicles the adventures of Juan, a 40-something slacker, who finds his true calling in the wake of the zombie apocalypse in Cuba. He sets up a business of disposing of family members who have been resurrected as zombies.

It seems like it would be impossible for any feature film to come from Cuba without being regarded as a political statement; and Juan is no exception (particularly since the zombie hordes are initially referred to, hilariously, as 'dissidents'). While Juan of the Dead obviously echoes Edgar Wright's brilliant Shaun of the Dead in more than the title, the deeper commentary appears to be more on the level of Romero's 1978 classic Dawn of the Dead. Who better than a Cuban film maker to resurrect (hee!) a commentary on modern consumerism in the guise of the undead? Although, according to Variety, Brugues has stated that, "If it really says anything about Cuba, it is its inhabitants' knack of making ends meet."

Juan of the Dead premiered at the Toronto film festival in 2011, and already has international release deals in Russia, Germany, Japan and the UK. The Focus World deal will have Juan viewed at US festivals in the first part of the year, and in April 2012 the film will have a theatrical release. Can Juan of the Dead live up to the hype? Check out the brilliance for yourself, below, in the official trailer:
