10 YouTube Experiences to brighten your 2012
| LISTS - OTHER LISTS |
Here's a round up of the best YouTube had to offer in 2011...

So here we are...2012. Another year to conquer our fears, work towards our goals and, more realistically, troll YouTube for the next viral clip.
Now, if you arrived late to the party, or simply cannot remember the earlier editions, this sequence of HTML will regurgitate, with pleasure, some of the greatest videos to grace this series in the past 12 months. Just think of us as your Youtube personal shopper.
I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and carry that festive cheer into the New Year, but meanwhile, enjoy these 10 clips!
10. It’s Ray!
This clip, my personal favourite of the year, was placed in the very first edition – I only hope I didn’t peak too soon.
Sit back and enjoy this snowy, superb, stuntman and his trusty ‘confidence antler’ (don’t tell me you forgot about it!), as he attempts to ‘get-air’ on a medium-sized ramp- sounds hilarious already.
Allow me to introduce Ray, the most inebriated stunt man to grace Rodney, Canada!
9. He’s Dead, Jim!
This 42 second clip contains the iconic Star Trek saying, “He’s dead, Jim!” far too many times to count (I have, but just can’t admit it).
Since I first recommended this clip its views have smashed the 10,000 mark and have marched merrily onto 44,000 views! Astounding. I wouldn’t claim it was all down to me, but in some small way, I feel I played a part.
Of course I’m joking, but please enjoy the clip!
8. Miles Fisher – New Romance
Apart from having the song stuck in my head for about two months, this music video is actually very funny – and shocking.
It stars Miles Fisher and the cast of Final Desination 5, (and no I’m not plugging the film - I haven’t even seen it!) which includes the ever hilarious David Koechner, of Anchorman fame.
What more can I say? Enjoy.
7. The Handlebar Moustache Club
This has to be included for its quintessential Britishness, and extreme uniqueness. I can’t think of another clip quite like it.
In order to join you must have what has been wonderfully described as “a hirsute appendage of the upper lip with graspable extremities”, that certainly rules me out!
Please bathe in this minute window into their bristly world of beer, bitter and moustaches!
6. Conversations on the Subway
“Over 1.1 million people ride the New York subway system every day…but hardly anyone talks to each other.”
This clip captured the zeitgeist, encapsulated the mood of the year. Amidst the enduring economic recession, and all the future uncertainties, the ability of humans to connect is one of the few things that can motivate people to survive.
5. New Boy
This Oscar nominated, Tribeca Film Festival winning short film is my second favourite of the year. Its wonderfully shot, perfectly acted and it doesn’t drag at any point in its 11 minute duration.
As I said in November, it’s a sombre yet heart-warming film that I believe you will be glad to watch – again.
4. Warriors of Goja
This has to be the stand-out ‘talent show’ clip of the year. The feats accomplished in the next seven minutes dwarf anything I’ve seen anywhere else.
I warn you: it’s surreal, shocking, amusing and there is a bit of blood at the end. But if you watched this when I first included it in November, you have nothing to fear. It’s just a few scratches.
All in all, this clip is a brilliant advert for Youtube!
3. Guiltiest Dog in Existence
The subject of this clip, Denver the dog, made it all the way to US National TV on the back of this wonderful clip.
Denver is suspected of breaking into a packet of doggy treats by his owner – who sounds like Woody Harrelson – and the canine in question breaks down under questioning. The music complements the video perfectly and adds to the comedy.
Unforgettable.
2. Validation
Herein resides my favourite short film of the year, Validation.
It is snappy, well written, and wonderfully acted. I do not possess enough superlatives to give this film the justice it deserves. It is 15 minutes of timeless genius and originality.
1. Trolling Saruman
Take the internet phenomenon that is the ‘Trolololol’ song and couple it with Lord of the Rings and you get this fine clip: Trolling Saruman. Since I stumbled upon it back in July it has been trending across all platforms and at the time of writing, has racked up 9.5 million views. That’s a whopping 7 million views since July, “wowsers!” as Inspector Gadget would say.
You’ll never watch Gandalf’s return to Isengard again without humming a certain tune.
