The zombie comic book turned TV series shuffles onto the web, showing no signs whatsoever of dying for good...

Bicycle Girl from 'The Walking Dead' to get a web series spin-off

Fans of the hit AMC series The Walking Dead who have been counting down to the October 16 season two premiere are about to get a break. On October 3, viewers can go to amctv.com to view a web series that will get things heated up for the new season. Directed by Greg Nicotero, special effects wizard and recently-named co-executive producer, the web series will explore the back story of one of the iconic 'walkers' from the pilot episode of the series.

Bicycle Girl from 'The Walking Dead' to get a web series spin-offIn episode 1, Days Gone Bye, Sheriff Rick Grimes encounters a zombie almost immediately upon his escape from the hospital, where he was unconscious during the zombie apocalypse. After, when he is leaving his home town to search for his family, he stops back by the walker for a mercy killing. (With the line, "I'm sorry for what happened to you.") This character, known to fans of the show and the comic as the Bicycle Girl, will be the focus of Nicotero's web series. Her back story will explore the beginning of the zombie outbreak - something that viewers of the show missed out on, as they are introduced to the post-apocalyptic world along with Rick Grimes, who was in a coma during the initial outbreak. The Bicycle Girl's back story was explored in the comics as well; although as the show tends not to follow the comics definitively, one would expect that even hard-core fans will encounter some surprises along the way.

In the press release from AMC, Nicotero stated, “Working on The Walking Dead with such a fantastic cast and crew has been an amazing opportunity, and to have our contribution to the show celebrated is a tremendous compliment. I have always felt like the show had a cinematic feel and everyone involved is dedicated to making this show something special. To be able to branch out and to develop not only the web series but also genre material is something I have always wanted to do; given the people I have had the pleasure of working with over the last 23 years.”

On Saturday, the same day as the announcement of Nicotero's promotion and the announcement of the web series direction, Nicotero and his team at KNB EFX won the Emmy award for Best Prosthetic Makeup, the show's first win. Big day! So mark your calendars for the next two big days for TWD: October 3, premiere of the web series on amctv.com; and October 16, premiere of Season Two on AMC.
