The Wii-U having serious development troubles

Insiders describe the Wii-U being "in development hell"...

Nintendo's Wii-U appears to be in development hell...

Nintendo seem to be having a bit of a rough time right now, they had that nasty fall in stock prices after thy announced the Wii-U, then they had to slash the price of the 3DS to try and boost sales, and now it seems like the Wii-U is having some very serious development issues.

01net, the website that was responsible for breaking the news of the 3DS having a circle pad had published and article stating, pretty frankly, that Nintendo, and the Wii-U is going quite badly in the development stage. "According to our source, it seems that the final architecture has been rushed through the door, with undesirable consequences", this statement from that article confirms that the problems may well be linked to Nintendo trying to cut costs and keep profits high. They have a reputation for this, and frequently publish much higher profit margins than other companies on their consoles.

The main problem seems to be the chipset they are using, and that it is just not adequate for the job, it seems they are trying to use the absolute minimum amount of power to do the job, and so far, it has been just too low.

"So far, the wireless functions simply do not work. At All."

"The Wii-U's main chipset - that manages the device's essential functions, including streaming and wireless - seems inadequate. This chip, described by our source as maybe a tad too cheap, has been the source of many headaches in recent weeks. So far, the wireless functions simply do not work. At All."

But if you think that a console so underpowered that it does not actually work sounds bad, well, it is. But it also gets worse. It doesn't work to the point where it seems like it is not only going to push back the release date, but it will also damage the quality of the games that are being made for the Wii-U.

"...Developers are working with a tethered controller: each one is fitted with a small black box with a tethered connection to the main unit. And even then, it still does not work properly... In those conditions, many feel unable to properly exploit the system's most innovative and promising features."

Considering that the Wii-U is scheduled for release in ten short months, the fact that they don't seem to be able to get a working model of their console to developers seems very bad indeed. We will have to wait to see how this unfolds, but my money is on the Wii-U being released much later in 2012 that Nintendo have predicted, if it makes it out that year at all. If it does, the release-date games are going to have a lot of bugs.
