Humanity is getting closer and closer to a cyborg revolution...

Deus Ex: The Eyeborg Documentary

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is creating a lot of hype. Everywhere you look it's getting almost flawless reviews - such as this one - and tons of praise, a lot of people are saying 'Game of the Year' too.

But never ones to simply rest on their laurels, Square Enix are following the game with a host of other content, and even a line of clothes. Their latest release is 'The Eyeborg Documentary', a film directed by Rob Spence, looking at pioneering work in cybernetics, augmented reality, prosthetic limbs and trans-humanism.

If that wasn't enough to grab your attention, Rob is also a cyborg himself (that's him on the left). After loosing his eye in a shooting accident, he has recently had a wireless camera installed in his eye socket, allowing him to record and transmit what he actually sees.

The film takes Rob on a journey around the world to meet other cyborgs and 'trans-humans' like himself, and to find out just how close we are to achieving the advanced technologies and cybernetic enhancements on display in Deus Ex.

On his journey Rob meets a host of people who have been helped by the latest developments in engineering and science. We see a blind man who is having some of his sight returned to him, fire-fighters who are looking to augmented reality to aid them in their work, and a number of amputees who are being given they very latest in prosthetic limbs.

The most interesting (for me at least) of these new technologies was the power knee. I was almost totally unaware of the different challenges faced by amputees, but I was shocked when I learned of how limited modern knee joints seem to be, with none of them offering any kind of powered support, something that seems like an obvious requirement in a leg.

But thankfully, that is now changing with the introduction of the inventively named 'Power Knee', which gives the user the force required to do things like stand up from a chair comfortably, or to climb stairs and walk around with a fluid, human gait.

Where Deus Ex ties in with this is that the game is set in the year 2027, and side-line to the film is whether we will have reached a similar level of technical and scientific development by that time. According to the video, the answer is a resounding yes.

So that is something to be excited about then, in 16 short years we could all be wielding robotic limbs, embedded cameras and bionic organs. That is, if we can get the 'brain to machine interface' sorted out...

You can check out this astounding documentary below, and I highly recommend you do.
