Even with Torchwood to keep us going, it’s been a dry summer without Doctor Who (although my wife did buy me the first part of Series 6 on DVD, which I’ve been enjoying). And with another week and a half to wait until the series comes back, it’s nice to know that the BBC has released a couple of clips to tide us over.
First is a prequel of sorts, written by Steven Moffat, which doesn’t have very much to it, but it does set the mood for the rest of the series. We get a little insight into Amy’s emotional state, and we see a distraught Doctor. It’s been kind of nice to see the Doctor in such a way, no longer the “Time Lord Victorious”, but someone who has been beaten down and is grasping at straws to keep both his friends and his sanity in check.
Next we have some preview clips from the upcoming episode 'Let’s Kill Hitler', which are relatively free of spoilers.
The first clip shows the Doctor, Amy and Rory, as well as another passenger coming out of a smoke-filled TARDIS. The new passenger is Nina Toussaint-White, who plays Mels. No real word on who she is, but Maya Glace-Green is listed as playing Young Mels (here and in the as-of-yet untitled thirteenth episode), and there are actors hired to play younger versions of both Rory and Amy, so one might assume that she could be a friend of theirs who is just along for a quick ride.
The second clip presents a probable demise for Amy and Rory (which, I mean, come on, you know they won’t die, right? Right?). The brief look we get at the Doctor’s realization that he’s in the company of Hitler shows that this is going to be an interesting episode. Exactly what would the universe’s greatest righter of wrongs do when brought face-to-face with one of the most evil men of the Twentieth Century? The moral and philosophical dilemma of such a possibility is quite mind-bending.
The two preview clips are introduced by Karen “Amy Pond” Gillan (like you didn’t know who she was), who gives little away outside of explaining that we will get to see both Amy and Rory in flashbacks, how they became a couple, and how their relationship is ever evolving, especially with the onset of parenthood.
'Let’s Kill Hitler', written by Steven Moffat and directed by Richard Senior, will air on BBC ONE and BBC America on Saturday, August 27. I’ll make the popcorn!
