Yoshimitsu vs Ryu - it's what dreams are made from...

Street Fighter Vs Tekken Trailer released

When news broke at a recent Comic con that Capcom had agreed terms with Namco to make a Vs series, the gaming world stopped still. For years, fans of the Street Fighter and Tekken franchises had argued as to which was the dominant, arcade-based fighter, with slanging-matches and fiery online disputes becoming part of the norm. After all, both had a unique style that made them attractive to their representative audience - Street Fighter was much more manga-esque than its competition, coated in a degree of Orientalism that surpassed anything before it. Furthermore, it was the original, coming a full seven years before the emergence of Tekken.

However, when it did finally arrive, many Street Fighter veterans found their allegiance shifting somewhat. It's thought-provoking storyline and fun line up made Tekken an attractive alternative, but what really cemented Tekken's position was its console presence. Sony's PlayStation had yet another classic from which to market itself, yet I'd say even they were unaware as to just how long the series would continue (Tekken 6, the eigth addition in the series, released on the PS3 in 2009, a full 15 years after the original).

To date, the arguements still continue; just which is the better fighting game? Would Ryu's 'hadouken' be to much for Yoshimitsu's 'bullet cutter'? How would Edmond Honda's sumo style of combat fair against Tekken's King, the ruthless street-fighter turned orphan-raring Catholic priest? Who's life is more tormented...Tekken's Jim Kazama or Street Fighter's Geki? Well ponder no more, as the first of what is set to be a two-game release has leaked a trailer:

As we can see, Capcom's release is very much in the mould of its Street Fighter titles. The cartoony graphics, the colourful combos and the hilarious vocal-attributes...they're all there. Now don't get me wrong, I think it looks great, but being a Tekken fan my legion lies with Namco and their forthcoming attempt. However, for the time being, this should keep the masses happy, and for any disappointed Tekken fans, look at the brightside...Yoshimitsu's back!
