Freddy Krueger is the next character set for Mortal Kombat

Nightmare on Elm Street was only the start...

Freddy Kreuger...the newest addition to Mortal Kombat 9

To this day, Freddy Kreuger remains one of the most iconic horror persona's of all time. Since 1984, Freddy has been stalking dreams and slashing throats, and now, in a move that is sure to appease even the most dedicated of horror fans, Mr. Kreuger is set to return one more...but this time, he's going digital.

In a bold but fitting move, Ed Boon and the boys over at NetherRealm Studios have sought to add Mr. Kreuger as their latest addition to Mortal Kombat, making him available as part of the games next DLC. So far, gamers have welcomed the likes of Skarlet, Kenshi and Rain to the series, all of which featured - in some form at least - in previous Mortal Kombat titles. However, like the addition of Kratos to the PS3 version of the game, Freddy offers a degree of variance that the other add-ons cannot. While unrelated to the franchise, Kreuger is himself a horror icon - a title worthy of his 25+ years in the genre - and is ultimately an eye-catching addition to the games already impressive roster.

Based roughly around the original character - as played by Robert Englund - Freddy has been brought to the mortal realm by Shao Khan. In the dreams world, Kreuger represented a powerful threat to Khan, but by transporting him to the mortal realm, Khan hopes to keep him under control.

As far as his fighting style goes, Freddy is described as a fast and fluid fighter, combining speed, aggression and his two powerful claws to make a devastating warrior. Furthermore, fans of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise will be pleased to see certain homages paid throughout; for one of his fatalities - known as " Tell 'Em Freddy Sent Ya" - Kreuger teleports behind his victim, impales them with his clawed gloves, before dragging them down into an opening in the ground ( and one would presume a different realm). Moments later - in true MK style - a geyser of blood shoots straight into the air. Anyone familiar with the original film should remember a similar demise for Jonny Depp's character.

Seemingly designed around pre-existing characters - his projectile gloves are reminiscent of Kung Lao's hat throws; and his teleport move, "Dream Shift", is somewhat similar to that of Scorpion's - Freddy looks set to be a great addition to an already impressive game.
