Sony secures one of its top, exclusive developers in eye-opening purchase...
In a move that's sure to solidify their position, Sony have sought to acquire one of the top developers producing content for their PS3 system, Sucker Punch Productions. In recent years, Sucker Punch have become known for their critically acclaimed Infamous series - the original has a score of 85 on Metacritic, whilst the sequel currently stands at 83 - but the company had originally gained repute through their Sly Cooper series, a game that saw the user controlling the appropriately named master thief, Sly Cooper, as he attempted to steal back many of his families heirlooms. Oh, and he was a raccoon...probably worth getting that out there.
For many, the acquisition of Sucker Punch Productions by Sony is rather inconsequential. The developer had been working exculsively for Sony since 2000 anyhow, so this purchase is unlikely to surprise those with a knowledge of the videogame market. However, in a time where many of the top console exclusives are shedding their skin - thus pursuing the financial viability of a multi-platform release - this move is sure to please many a PS3 user.
While financial details have not disclosed, SCE WWS president, Shuhei Yoshida, has spoken about his excitement in regards to the purchase. "Sucker Punch Productions is one of the most highly acclaimed development studios in the industry and we have enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the company for over 12 years. We are delighted to officially welcome them to the SCE family," Yoshida said.
Yoshida went on to say that "The addition of Sucker Punch to SCE WWS reiterates our dedication to developing world class gaming experiences that can only be found on the PlayStation platform. With one of the strongest exclusive software lineups in the PS3's history, combined with the diverse, innovate content in the works for PlayStation Vita, consumers have a lot to be excited about this year."
According to Sony's official press release, the Infamous and Sly Cooper franchises have sold over seven million copies combined to date, and this is something the company hopes to continue.
Speaking about the purchase, Brian Fleming, managing partner of Sucker Punch, said: "We've enjoyed an incredible relationship with Sony over the years; one that has allowed us to combine our creative design capabilities with their guidance to make some of the best franchises to hit the PlayStation platforms. As a part of the Sony Computer Entertainment group we look forward to introducing more innovative content and providing consumers with exciting, new interactive experiences".
So, all's well that ends well I suppose. I just hope that Sony leaves them to it though; after all, why fix what isn't broken?
