Winter is coming, but this time for your PC...

As you might have guessed A Game of Thrones: Genesis is the video game adaptation of HBO’s hugely successful series Game Of Thrones, and it looks like it could be something quite special.

Announced at E3 earlier this year, a A Game of Thrones: Genesis is a PC only strategy game, in a similar vein to Sid Meier's Civilisation series. Taking control of one of the Major Noble houses of Westeros, players will be able to use diplomacy, trade, war and treachery to control the coveted Iron Throne.

The game is set long before the events of the books, and players will be able to participate in some of the founding events of The Kingdom and its largest battles.

The focus of the gameplay is on diplomacy and alliance building; it’s still an RTS, but there is no base-building, unlocking technologies or mass production. You still need to collect food and gold in the usual ways, and raise and upkeep your army. Each major house also has a special unit and traits -  The Starks have stronger command units and dire wolf units at their disposal.

The game's website launched July 12th, and is stuffed with videos, media and screenshots from the game. The site is still being added to, and promises to deliver a steady stream of content over the coming months.

Scheduled for release ‘later this year’, A Game of Thrones: Genesis is already showing a lot of promise. The prospect of conquering Westeros and ruling from the Iron Throne is very appealing indeed, and the ‘... Ice and Fire’ universe provides an excellent setting for a complex and engrossing strategy game. From what we can see so far, I think it’s safe to be pretty optimistic about the latest addition to George R.R. Martin’s epic franchise.
