New Captain America trailer released

Summer marketing campaign heats up ...

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America will face Hugo Weaving as Red Skull in 'Captain America: The First Avenger' (2011)

The second official trailer for the upcoming Captain America film was released today, and does it look fantastic! Captain America has been, so far, unplagued by the commentary on CGI and effects that plagued Green Lantern prior to its release. Because it looks amazing. Chris Evans' transformation from teeny dweeb to hefty hero is revisited in detail, with some compelling glimpses of Tommy Lee Jones and of course, Hugo Weaving, baddest bad guy ever.

Chris Evans looking heroic in the latest 'Captain America: The First Avenger' (2011) posterIn a recent interview with MTV, Captain America himself addressed the shield question - why does the shield look different in different posters, and areas of the film? "They have a bunch of different shields ... some of them are really heavy, legit shields that look fantastic on film. Some are kind of a bit rubbery when you're doing dangerous stuff and you don't want to get hit in the face by it. Each one has a different weight to it. It's always strange, but it's always great trying it on."

Producer Kevin Feige gave some hints about the movie as well, when they opened up the set to select press. "95% of this movie takes place in the past. The bookends are in the modern day. The very first scene of the film is the discovery in the arctic. If you know anything about Cap, you might know what that discovery is." They went on to describe the origin story, which they say is classic, direct from the comics. It's interesting, too, that they've imbued the film with a 40's retro-feel, while making futuristic equipment, heroes, villains, and weapons. "We're not making The Thin Red Line or Band of Brothers ... what we can do that those films can't is peel back the layers, and suggest that there’s a secret history, with secret good guys, and secret bad guys, that you never knew about."

Disappointing critic and fan reaction to the most recent superhero offering, Green Lantern, notwithstanding, excitement rides high for the upcoming Captain America: The First Avenger. See for yourself why - check out the trailer below!

In addition to Chris Evans and Tommy Lee Jones and Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull, the film stars Hayley Atwell (Pillars of the Earth), Natalie Dormer (The Tudors, and recently announced to be joining Game of Thrones), Richard Armitage (The Hobbit, Spooks, the BBC's Robin Hood), Stanley Tucci (Gambit, The Hunger Games), and Toby Jones (the Dream Lord from the Doctor Who episode Amy's Choice). It's directed by Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer), and written by Chronicles of Narnia scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, with a quick polish from Joss Whedon (the upcoming The Avengers). Captain America: The First Avenger will be released on July 22, 2011 in the US, and July 29, 2011 in the UK.
