VIDEO: Speed dating with Superman

Who would have thought The Man Of Steel was such a player..?
Ahead of next week's release of The Complete Superman Collection on Blu-ray, I was delighted to be offered a look at this clip from what is proving to be an ever-evolving Extras culture on Superman releases. The 2006 3-disk special edition Richard Donner Cut of Superman II brought these sadly up to date in a world after Christopher Reeve; but there always seems to be something new in the excellent documentaries that accompany the latest efforts.
The superb DVD edition of the original Richard Donner Superman (1978) of the late 1990s gave fans a great chance to see the actresses who were nearly Lois Lane (along with alternative castings for Ursa and even Superman himself). And if the new Blu-ray can only expand lightly on that, it's all welcome.
[ Interestingly, the original Superman movie, if you believe the forums, ranks alongside Jaws as one of the hardest DivX encodes of all time, due to the soft-focus cinematography of Geoffrey Unsworth. In that respect, this may turn out to be one of Blu-ray's most interesting releases in terms of image quality. ]
In this clip, we meet the alternative Loises once again, including Anne Archer (a great favourite of mine for a wonderful and extended turn as Dennis and Sweet Dee's mum in It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia), Grease's Stockard Channing, the vibrant Lesley Ann Down...and, of course, the impressively smitten Margot Kidder...
I don't hate Kate Bosworth, despite a reasonable amount of net evidence to the contrary. I don't even know the woman - but I don't think she would have made it very far in Supes' speed-dating extravaganza in 1977, as the Salkinds, Donner and the late great Tom Mankiewicz scoured the USA for an actress who could portray one of the most famous fictional women of the 20th century. Hopefully Amy Adams won't be such a grump in Man Of Steel.
But ultimately I agree with Donner himself that no-one else is likely ever to get the magic of Superman quite as right as the first two movies. And I suspect that Bryan Singer, who made what I have to concede is the world's most expensive Superman fan-video, would probably agree. But we'd all be happy to be proved wrong.
The Complete Superman Collection is released on 13th of June.
