Total Remake: Casting Update
| NEWS - MOVIE NEWS |
Get your ass to the cinema ...

Total Recall, the remake of the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger classic, is continuing to make interesting casting choices. First up was Colin Farrell, who will take on Arnold's role of Quaid; the everyman who may or may not be a spy for the bad guys. Or the good guys. Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, the recently retitled John Carter (formerly of Mars)) is on board as Vilos Cohaagen, the villain; and today three more actors were confirmed as well. Jessica Biel will play Rachel (Melina), Quaid's fantasy girl; and Kate Beckinsale has signed on to reinvent the Sharon Stone role, Quaid's wife who may or may not be a spy for the bad guys.
Call it Underworld: Reunion; not only is Beckinsale reuniting professionally with her husband (Len Wiseman, who directed the first two Underworld films and Die Hard 4.0, and will direct Total Recall) but today Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3's Bill Nighy (who played Viktor in Underworld) accepted a role as well: that of Kuato, leader of the resistance.
The Total Recall remake has been rewritten by Kurt Wimmer, who has experience writing (and directing, for that matter) a dystopian future from his 2002 effort, Equilibrium, which was fantastically watchable sci-fi. More recently, Wimmer was responsible for Salt, the less-watchable current day spy-thriller. Perhaps returning to dystopian sci-fi will be a good move! Also, word is that Mars will not be a part of the remake, either. Rather than interplanetary conflict, the warring nation-states of Euromerica and New Shanghai will take the places of Earth and Mars in the story. Wimmer reportedly drew from both the previous movie and from Philip K. Dick's short story We Can Remember it for You Wholesale (1966). Let's hope he finds a way to work in the girl with three breasts! Total Recall is scheduled for release on August 3, 2012, and begins filming shortly in Toronto.
