Cuban zombie film to resurrect lifeless movie industry ...

The first feature-length horror film to come out of Cuba in half a century, Juan of the Dead, is set for an international release this summer. What is bound to be seen as a controversial storyline domestically, takes place in contemporary Cuba and satirizes the social customs of the Castro years.

After a surge in grisly murders takes place across the island, the government and state media blame US-backed rebels and reassure the population that the situation is under control. As the attacks continue, Juan, a forty-something slacker in Havana identifies the true perpetrator, a plague of zombies. His reaction to this startling discovery is to become a capitalist mercenary, which sees him set up a business, ‘Juan of the Dead’, and make a quick profit by eradicating the infected loved ones of the Cuban population.

The film’s tagline reads: "Fifty years after the Cuban revolution a new one is about to start." Alejandro Brugués, the director and writer, has claimed he is a huge fan of the zombie horror genre. The film’s title echoes the British 2004 zombie film Shaun of the Dead, which in turn was a pun on the classic George A. Romero film Dawn of the Dead. Although the Cuban film industry witnessed a brief revival in the sixties with the release of a handful of arthouse titles, it has remained stagnant over the past few years and has received little international exposure. Juan of the Dead, however, hopes to correct all that by taking its place among the classics of the genre. Check out the trailer below:
