New Green Lantern TV Spot

In brightest day, in blackest night...

Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan in 'The Green Lantern' (2011)

The first Green Lantern trailer, released last November, was widely criticized for...well, lots of things. Lackluster CGI. Unconvincing story, at least the snippets that we got to see, with a bewildering lack of action. Ryan Reynolds portraying a plausible Hal, with his own snarky powers, but somehow the original trailer didn't scream 'summer blockbuster'. And there was a total, complete lack of the Oath! The media machine pulled back to work on some of those issues, and released several minutes of footage at this week's  WonderCon, to great acclaim. Riding the wave of that positivity, check out the brand-new TV spot through the link below:

Reynolds took some time at WonderCon to discuss the footage shown with Reelz, and his experiences on the film. He addressed criticism of the original trailer by noting that the film's effects were still being completed, and that there were only 'about fifteen minutes' of usable footage to create a trailer from. He also took responsibility for some of the overall comedic tone of the original trailer, "You have to inject some of your own, you know, being into the character to make it work. But at the same time, you have to be deeply reverent and respectful of the character's origins, so we were very careful we never pushed that too far." The Green Lantern character does allow for some humor in interpretation, "It's not The Dark Knight, you know."

Reynolds admitted that it was difficult to work in such an effects-heavy role, but that he achieved it by tapping into "that thing from when you were a kid, that yearning to pretend." He also went on to discuss his interpretation of the character of Hal, and what makes Hal such a great Green Lantern: fear. "What distinguishes Hal from the other Lanterns is that he has the ability to overcome fear. Because he experiences it. And [the other Lanterns] see that as a weakness, that he experiences fear. And overcoming fear is the very definition of courage, you know? It's moving on in spite of it, not because of it. It's what makes him the greatest Green Lantern of them all."

Viewing the new footage and the TV spot above is almost enough to convince the audience that this is, indeed, the case. Hearing Ryan Reynolds speaking so passionately, with such a good grasp of the character, is another step in the right direction. The Green Lantern (out June 17, 2011) is a film worth getting excited about.
