Del Toro discusses Pacific Rim

NEWS - MOVIE NEWS

What do you mean, no Mountains movie?

Staring matches with monsters feature surprisingly high on Guillermo del Toro’s list of projects...

With the news that the deal for At the Mountains of Madness has fallen apart at Universal, speculation is rising as to what the master director will do next. (There has been very little discussion as to what Tom Cruise will do next. I'm just sayin'.) In an interview with ComicBookMovie.com, Del Toro discussed Mountains, his plans for future projects including Pacific Rim, and the possibility of Hellboy 3.

At the Mountains of Madness will not be made at Universal, but Del Toro is committed to shopping the project to other studios. "A hundred percent, I'll try, yeah ... with a little bit of luck we will find good terms to get it back from Universal."  He said that the deal fell apart due to timing, "it was just not the right time, and it is a lot of money."

Timing actually played in Del Toro's favor, however, when it came to his next project, Pacific Rim. He was already attached to the film as a producer, so when the decision about Mountains came through, he decided to direct Pacific Rim next. "We have been in pre-production for six months ... I was developing the visual bible for that. We hope to start shooting in September."

Pacific Rim is shaping up to be a fantasy-horror movie, which Del Toro does to perfection. In the film, there are two worlds. The first is our world, in the near future, after a monster emerged from a portal under the ocean that leads to another world, the Anteverse. The portal continues to expel giant monsters who attack port cities along the Pacific Rim. The plot follows military response to the monster menace, and a journalist's investigation into the mysterious portal. So far the film has garnered comparisons with Jurassic Park, Godzilla, and Avatar. Let's hope it's more Pan's Labyrinth or Hellboy than any of those!

Speaking of Hellboy, on the down side, for true fans of Hellboy and Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, Del Toro stated that "there are no plans at all" for a Hellboy 3.
