Kneel Before Viggo!!

Superman: Man of Steel is the hottest ticket in town. And now it may be adding some extremely hot actors to the cast as well.

A couple of weeks ago, it was reported that actresses were being brought in to read for a female villain part in the movie: perhaps Ursa? And you can't have Ursa without Zod! However, in October Zack Snyder stated that the inclusion of Zod in the new film was "just a rumor".

Now it seems that the rumors were accurate! The Hollywood Reporter said today that Viggo Mortensen was a "person of interest", and was being considered by director Zack Snyder for the part of Zod. Most recently, Mortensen was in negotiations to play the Huntsman in Snow White and the Huntsman, but it seems that those negotiations are still in progress.

Zod is an exciting choice for a number of reasons: first, it was done so well by Terence Stamp back in the 80's, in Superman II. He's a truly compelling villain; as a Kryptonian, he's powered by the yellow sun of earth as Superman is himself. It's not your standard Superman set-up, which we've seen over and over again. Superman versus Lex Luthor is alien versus human, morality versus corruption, rural versus urban, physical power versus monetary power - all interesting questions, but they've been done to death. Superman versus Zod poses new and equally interesting questions: if an opponent has equal physical strength, and is not bound by moral codes, how can they be stopped?

Henry Cavill will don the tights to portray Superman; and apparently Kevin Costner will be playing Jonathan Kent, Superman's father. Unconfirmed casting includes the Ursa rumors from earlier this month: that Diane Kruger (Inglorious Basterds), Rosamund Pike (Die Another Day) and Alice Eve (She's Out of My League) were all auditioning for the part. However, since then, two of the three actresses have taken high-profile parts in other films: Rosamund Pike in Wrath of the Titans and Alice Eve in Men in Black III. In their Viggo-as-Zod article, The Hollywood Reporter said that the producers were still looking to cast the three female parts, which can safely be assumed to mean Ursa, Martha Kent, and Lois Lane. However, casting for those parts are just rumors...especially that Lindsay Lohan rumor that just. Won't. Die.
