Shane Black set to direct 'Iron Man 3'?

A winning team recombine... with a budget!
With Iron Man 1/2 helmer Jon Favreau tempted away to DIsney's Magic Kingdom, Shane Black - who directed and wrote the hilarious and often under-rated 2005 comedy-crime outing Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, is apparently set to to take the reigns of Marvel's billionaire superhero. The Black/Downey combination was screen magic in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, so as an RDJ fan, I have to say that this feels very right, and looks to me like a chance to redeem a franchise that started off so well, only to be conferenced to death in the mess of Iron Man 2.
Deadline's scoop doesn't mention whether Black will have any official script input to Iron Man 3, but hiring a writer of that wit and sharpness for RDJ and then telling him to 'leave the dialogue alone' would be plain nuts. Negotiations for Black to get on board Iron Man 3 are apparently at the final stage between manager David Greenblatt's GreenLit Creative and Black's agency, WME. Black's resumé as a writer includes Lethal Weapon (1 & 2), The Long Kiss Goodnight, The Last Boy Scout and The Last Action Hero, whilst he has appeared as an actor in Predator, Robocop 3 and As Good as It Gets.
Black has also been conscripted by Warner Bros to develop the live action version of the Manga Death Note, and is additionally involved in the Doc Savage project.
But, y'know, later - whatever. This is the smartest and most exciting assignment of a director that I've seen in a long time, and gives us the genuine prospect of returning wit and invention to Iron Man. Or at least having a bloody good try before the marketing people step in with the chloroform.
This isn't a done deal yet, and if it doesn't get done, it will truly be a lost opportunity. The only thing that could make the prospect sweeter is a guest-spot by Val Kilmer...
