Pic: Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man

And what a surprise, the mask is off...

At last we see young Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man / Peter Parker in an unmasked pic from the current production of Spider-Man (is this really the final title, given that it's the same title used in the 2001 Sam Raimi version?). As usual the ancient conundrum about masked superheroes needing to unmask in movies immediately comes to the fore, as we see everyone's favourite web-slinger sans headgear.
He looks pretty mis, doesn't he? The first two Raimi movies presented a fairly dark and confused Peter Parker, but I suspect that director Marc Webb and screenwriters James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent remain under strict orders to remember the profitable gloom of The Dark Knight and subsequently ramp up the angst considerably.
The film also features Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors / The Lizard, Martin Sheen as 'Uncle' Ben Parker, Sally Field as 'Aunt' May Parker, Emma Stone as new Arachnid love-interest Gwen Stacy and Dennis Leary as her dad. The Vanderbilt script has been described as "gritty" and "contemporary", and compared to the tone of Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins. Hopefully Webb & Co. won't forget that nutty humour and naive youthful energy was one of the main things that popularised this character...
