EA caught browsing at Google’s success

The web-behemoth widens its reach again, to the world of online gaming...

There’s just something about Google that works. Whether it’s their continued dominance of the search-engine field or their recent success in the web-browser department, Google continue to remain at the forefront of modern Internet developments. Despite inevitable early teething problems with Chrome, the company's own web-browser has done phenomenally, combining record-breaking load speeds with Google’s ever-customisable applications to produce a web-browser unlike any before it.
With that in mind, it was only a matter of time before companies realised the potential of Chrome and began to take advantage of its publicly accessible API. Enter Electronic Arts (EA). The videogames publishing giant, already a household name on all commercially available consoles, has agreed a partnership with Google which will see them adding a number of games to Google’s recently launched Web Store for Chrome. A number of EA’s biggest successes have already gone live at the store, including the likes of FIFA Superstars, Tiger Woods' PGA TOUR Online and one of EA’s earlier successes, Poppit!. In fact, Poppit! developers even used Google’s Web Toolkit to port the game to a HTML5 format, a transition that has made the game “faster and more visually appealing than ever” according to EA Chief Operating Officer John Schappert.
As a Chrome user myself, I am particularly excited by these recent developments and look forward to seeing if they can make up for the number of little problems I have found whilst using Chrome. With EA also hinting that a 2D version of Mirror’s Edge may be available at the store in the near future, these certainly are exciting times for both Google and gamers across the world. However, it will be interesting to see how the 120 million Chrome users take to the Web Store, the outcome of which will ultimately decide just how many other game developers join EA in their latest quest for gaming superiority.
