The Seventh Doctor joins The Hobbit cast

McCoy to be part of the next foray to Middle-Earth...

In an interview with the BBC, Sylvester McCoy has revealed that he will be part of the cast of the upcoming production of The Hobbit. The Seventh Doctor of the long-running Dr. Who series, the 67-year-old McCoy would not reveal which role he will be playing, only that his part specifically called for an actor "between 57 and 75" years of age. This has fueled speculation that McCoy will be playing Radagast the Brown, fellow wizard to Gandalf the Grey and Saruman the White.
Radagast did not appear in the film adaptations of Lord of the Rings, but plays a small role in the novel. He was also mentioned during Bilbo's earlier adventures during The Hobbit and was friends with the shape-shifting character Beorn. Disregarded by Saruman as a nature-obsessed "fool", he is nevertheless a friend and ally of Gandalf, who warmly describes Radagast as his "cousin" of sorts.
McCoy resisted further probing by the BBC, who said that he was sworn to secrecy regarding his role and joked that his wrist had already been 'gently tapped' so as to not divulge any more information about Peter Jackson's hotly-anticipated return to Middle-Earth. The former Doctor did mention, however, that he had been in the running to play Bilbo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings films, a part ultimately won by Ian Holm.
The announcement is sure to excite fans of McCoy from his Dr. Who years. His Seventh Doctor is the only incarnation besides David Tennant's Tenth Doctor to ever dethrone Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor as 'Best Doctor' among readers of Dr. Who Magazine, when he won the award in 1990.
