Walking Dead writers fired?

A Doctor Who template for the zombie plague...
Executive producer Frank Darabont has apparently released all writers from the hugely successful AMC series The Walking Dead. It is rumored that Darabont's intention is not to hire a new staff of writers, but instead to have freelance writers do the bulk of the work, as on the UK series Doctor Who and Torchwood. The first season had a template for dividing the work between several people, with a different director for each episode. Perhaps Darabont will expand that to the writing staff as well?
With ratings on the rise, breaking records left and right, and the show renewed for a second season, it seems like a strange choice. However, the freelance writers will have a basis for story arcs in the comic book source material, and Darabont apparently did a lot of the writing for the first season; with the second season not expected till October 2011, there will be plenty of time to work on it!
