Peter Jackson gives thumbs up to a 3D 'Hobbit'

Following ex-Hobbit helmer Guillermo Del Toro's declaration that he would not shoot the new Middle-Earth films in 3D, original trilogy director Peter Jackson, who is returning to direct The Hobbit from February of next year, has confirmed that he is not going to buck Hollywood's trend.

Jackson will be using the EPIC digital camera system for the Hobbit movies, requiring no fewer than thirty of them to complete the productions. The EPIC equipment is currently more portable than most 3D systems, and shoots in 5k resolution at up to 128 frames a second, boasting 'the highest dynamic range of any camera ever made'.

The EPIC cameras themselves are not double-lensed single-body efforts such as those employed in James Cameron's Avatar, but 'twinned-up' in custom harnesses to shoot native 3D.

Jackson is one of a slew of directors who are being persuaded by 3D, either through genuine enthusiasm or studio pressure. Jackson states: "I myself was not interested in shooting The Hobbit in 3D [but]....I do believe that big spectacle movies like Avatar or At The Mountains Of Madness or The Haunted Mansion should be in 3D”.

Now it only remains for Christopher Nolan to recant his determination to favour IMAX over 3D for the follow-up to The Dark Knight, and the format will have won years of development, possibly leading to a permanence instead of the fad that 3D has proved to be over the last 100 years of movie-making...
