The Event S1E8 review

There's a brand-new bad guy in town ...

"For the Good of Our Country"
We get to the bottom (okay, the middle) of the conspiracy to assassinate the President with an airplane. The President does some investigative work and finds that one of his advisors was in on it – and it’s the VP, Jarvis! (So much for building dramatic tension, hey?) Hal Holbrook tells Vicky to kill Jarvis but she talks him into confessing and selling out Hal, and he almost does, but he gets blown up in a car bomb instead. Sean gets shot but escapes capture, and Leila kidnaps a doctor to take care of him.
The President interrogates Michael Buchanan and gets a new tip - the plane crash was almost called off. The timing of the go-ahead call means that one of the President’s advisors sold him out when he wouldn’t agree to call off the alien prisoner release. VP Jarvis tries to get a transcript of the President’s interview but finds it restricted and panics. Oops.
On a different show, the idea that there’s a traitor in the White House and that one of the President’s closest advisors was in on an assassination attempt could be spun out for a couple of weeks. Remember 24? Instead, The Event throws the puzzle and the solution out practically simultaneously. So who cares?

The President tells Creepy that he’s sure that Creepy isn’t the bad guy, because of his personal experience with disloyalty. But he also checked Creepy's phone records. Hah! I trust you, completely, now that I have investigated you thoroughly. That’s so funny, in a completely unintentional way. The President and Creepy analyze the phone records for all advisors and realize that Jarvis made a call at the right time. The President wants Jarvis arrested and Creepy says, hilariously, “For what? We covered up the assassination attempt.” And now we see the error of our mistake. The President goes to confront Jarvis and finds him gone to a doctor’s appointment. Although the doctor’s office has a secret hidden tunnel where he can meet Hal Holbrook, whose name on the show is Dempsey. Hi Dempsey! A flashback to an election rally in New Orleans shows us how the VP met Dempsey, who offers Jarvis a chance at a cross-party ticket as Martinez’ running mate. This is hilarious – they take great care to refer to ‘his party’ and ‘your party’, rather than Democrat or Republican. In the present day, Hal Holbrook meets with Vicky, and questions her about Sean and Leila’s escape from the police station in TX and he totally knows that she betrayed him. And she’s going to have to kill the VP.
Jarvis gets to his meeting with Hal, but finds Vicky instead, along with the Federal Marshal from about six episodes ago. Vicky aims at Jarvis but shoots her partner the Marshal instead. (We’ve only seen Vicky on three or four missions, and every time she kills her partner. At least this time she didn’t steal a baby. This will show up on a performance review at some point.) Anyway, Vicky puts her gun in Jarvis’ face and tells him to sell out Hal Holbrook, for his own sake as well as Vicky’s. Jarvis calls the President and confesses, sort of, but won’t tell him who he’s working for over the phone. As he’s being escorted to his car it explodes. He actually says, “Eli, it was –” boom! Hackneyed plot device #2. Maybe he'll survive, Casino-style. Or Simon Lee-style. Hal is told that Vicky betrayed him again, and he heads over to the mirror where his image changes from Hal, to a much younger version of Hal, grinning evilly.

We get to see Sean and Leila escaping the explosion at the hacker’s house, again. Their conversation, again. Sean reassuring Leila, again. They agree to look for Leila’s sister in California – suddenly a hackneyed plot device, I mean a shot rings out! Sean gets shot in the chest but survives long enough to clock the bad guy with a crowbar and steal a car with Leila. They drive past the police, away from the scene of the crime, with a busted window – you’d think the police were trained to observe that sort of thing. They drive to a hospital, kidnap a doctor, take him to a pharmacy and return to the car to find Sean gone. They track him down an alley and Leila has to stick her fingers in the wound, and a needle into his bone marrow, ick, but Sean will be okay.
So, no major plot holes, yay! There were some advancements in story; the VP is bad, Vicky wants out, Hal Holbrook’s name is Dempsey and he’s an alien or shape shifting mutant or something. And there were so many funny parts! Sadly, this is not a comedy. And the funny far outweighed the drama this week.
