Martin Sheen closing on Uncle Ben role in new Spider-Man
| NEWS - MOVIE NEWS |
Good choice. Still a weird project in general...

I continue to be mystified at the Spider-Man reboot. Every time a new piece of casting comes up, I can't help thinking that I had only just got used to the actors and arc of the previous incarnation under Sam Raimi. Every time I read about it, it sounds like the daftest thing that Hollywood has ever done, and certainly the most cynical.
But hey, what do I know? Anyway, the excellent Martin Sheen can do no harm to the new effort, which is helmed by Marc Webb; HR reports that the Apocalypse Now and West Wing actor is closing negotiations to play Peter Parker's spiritual father and advisor, Uncle Ben. The role was played (possibly with overweening old-time goodness) by Cliff Robertson in the Raimi films, and killed off in the first (2001) movie in order to provide Parker's motive for his vigilante vendetta.
We don't know if Sheen's 'Ben' will survive the 2012 movie, which begins shooting next month with Andrew Garfield as Parker/Spidey, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as the film's mysterious villain.
