Italian plumbers invade (and conquer) Japan

Even the stock market didn’t see this one coming!

A character that is about as well known as God himself, super-idraulico Mario, has been dodging barrels, travelling through our pipelines and jumping on turtles for over 25 years, and yet we still can’t get enough of the little Italian. With numerous appearances on a range of consoles, Mario is to gaming as Roald Dahl is to children’s literature...an unforgettable icon.
However, unlike Roald Dahl, Mario is still going strong, as his recent sales in Japan have proved. A 25th anniversary Super Mario Collection has outsold everything else in Japan, shifting over 300,000 in a week. The pack, which includes Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 2, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels, a soundtrack CD and a 32-page history book, is currently exclusive to Japan but will be coming to the US and Europe in the near future.
While Mario may not have had the same charisma or modern hairstyle as Sega’s Sonic, there’s no doubting his importance, and here lies the reason why this is going straight to the top of my wish-list. Besides, Mario seems like he’d make a nicer house guest; however, with his track record with women, I won’t be leaving my girlfriend's safety to him!
