The perennial problem with adapting masked comic-book heroes, which has plagued everything from Judge Dredd to the Spider-Man franchise, returns today to haunt new box-office prospect Captain America.

Truth is, we know the shielded crusader best with a mask on. Truth No. 2: Chris Evans wasn't cast for just the lower third of his face. Therefore this new look at Captain America is kind of ambivalent. It's...well, I don't know how to adequately express it, but it's...Chris Evans in a Captain America costume.

But you can't cast small, so off comes the mask, every five minutes, every movie of this type...
