Cameron wants Leterrier for Fantastic Voyage

Thirty years of re-development hell nears its end...?

The remake of Richard Fleischer's 1966 miniaturisation SF outing Fantastic Voyage has been in the works for decades. Hamstrung by the success of imitator Inner Space (1987) during the 1980s, it's one of those projects that has failed to get off the ground through numerous surges of cinematic interest in sci-fi.

Shane Salerno's script has gained enough approval for Avatar's production designers to practically call the chippies in for a 2011 shoot, and Deadline reveal that Cameron is heavily interested in Louis Leterrier to helm the project. Naturally the project is set for 3D, and anyone who has ever seen any of the IMAX undersea 3D movies will know that this may be a more interesting project for the format than most recently announced 3D movies.
Through no real fault of his own, Leterrier is currently associated with pretty bad 3D, after a studio decision to make a hasty 3D-conversion on Clash Of The Titans, but Fantastic Voyage is to benefit from the same dedicated technology that Cameron developed for Avatar, and whatever you think of that movie, that's some pretty damned good 3D...
