Cars 2 publicity is a go...

Over the years, Pixar’s commitment to quality storytelling has resulted in a remarkably consistent run of films. This has been accompanied by a commensurate level of critical acclaim, except for the bizzarely underrated Cars. With the sequel out next year, here’s a first look at the film, which sees the racing car Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) competing in the World Grand Prix, taking in a variety of international racing locations, aided by his tow truck buddy Mater (Larry The Cable Guy), who gets unwittingly embroiled in international spy-jinks after saving the life of British agent Finn McMissile.

Brad Lewis, who produced Ratatouille, will co-directs with John Lasseter (Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, Cars), and Denise Ream, associate producer of Up and visual effects executive producer of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, will produce.

The film is to be made available in 3D (as well as 2D), which is great news considering the stunning visuals of the 3D Cars spin-off short film, Tokyo Mater, which preceded Disney’s fantastic Bolt in 3D.

Cars 2 will also apparently be accompanied by an animated short film featuring cameos from Toy Story characters. This is the way to continue the franchise: Toy Story 3 brought the trilogy to a satisfying emotional close, but there’s arguably potential to bring back the characters for a fun little short without making the franchise seem over-extended.
Cars 2 is released in the US on June 24, 2011.
