Cinematographer Wally Pfister talks Inception and more
| NEWS - MOVIE NEWS |
Delve into his mind to discover some of the secrets of filmmaking…

Cinematical talked to Christopher Nolan’s frequent collaborator Wally Pfister (the two have worked together on Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, and now Inception) at the Dallas Film Festival earlier this year, and the result is a fascinating interview. It gives insight into his working methods, his relationship with Christopher Nolan, and his attitude towards growing audience sophistication.
It’s remarkably detailed, talking about his input into various aspects of the film, using visual storytelling techniques to further the emotion of the story, trying to get as much as possible on camera so as to simplify post-production, and the logistics of filmmaking.
He also discusses his and Nolan’s distinctive way of working, covering hand-held camerawork, planning films out in detail but also improvising on set, filming everything in first-unit photography, and their views on 3D.
It also includes the surprising (and awesome) revelation that Christopher Nolan is a Michael Bay fan!
The highly-anticipated, mysterious Inception is out on July 16 in the US and the UK.
