Hot action, hot ladies, smoking guns...The Losers almost has everything a good actioner needs...

Jeffrey Dean Morgan in a bad mood in 'The Losers'

Ready for some action boys? Because this film has bags of it. Within minutes The Losers takes you into the murky world of deception, double-crossing and cunning with a few explosions thrown in to boot. It has everything you need for a good action movie - mindless violence, baddies vs. goodies, smoking hot ladies, explosions and plenty of guns. It does exactly what it says on the tin, and then some.

When a team of U.S Special Forces unit are betrayed by a corrupt and powerful businessman known by the name of ‘Max’ (Jason Patric). The team –Clay (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Jensen (Chris Evans), Roque (Idris Elba), Pooch (Columbus Short) and Cougar (Óscar Jaenada) are presumed dead, and hatch plans to take their revenge on Max and wage war on the CIA with the help of one Aisha (Zoe Saldana) – she’s the smoking hot one, who is wanted by just about everyone.

There are some laugh-out-loud moments, particularly in the case of Jensen (Chris Evans) who seems to have a built-in block to embarrassment and awkwardness. When he’s caught half-naked in the lift by a group of women, he asks if they are ‘Liking the angle of the dangle?’ This pretty much sums up Jensen – quick thinking, smart and funny. Even when he’s pretending to have a spinal injury, he still tries to chat up the officer who comes to help him. Cougar (Jaenada) also has his moments, particularly where his hat is involved and with not much to say, when he does say it, he says it with style and gusto. ‘Never touch the hat.’ - don’t worry Cougar, I definitely won’t.

Waging war against the CIA doesn’t sound like the smartest move, but somehow it works, and this is only enhanced by the way director Sylvain White introduces the characters in comic-book form, each with different jobs, and goes back to that theme throughout the film. This, paired with the brilliant soundtrack, including ‘Don’t stop believing’ by Journey, is enough to push out the realms of reality for a while.

The plot's unexpected twists and turns make the film far more interesting than just a chase to get the bad guy, and when you find out that the good guys really can’t trust anyone, it starts to get really interesting. This, and the unpredictability of Max (Jason Patric) who when you first meet his character kills one of his assistants, keeps you guessing throughout.

Where this film really falls down is the ending. There seems to be no clear resolution to it, and a lot of loose ends which weren’t tied up that should have been. It’s still not totally clear who won, if there’s going to be a sequel, and how the Losers got to where they were without the CIA busting their asses. Confused? I definitely am. It left me feeling disappointed and wanting more. I suppose Anyone Else Would be Dead Right Now, but I’m not overly convinced.

The Losers opens in the UK on May 28th
