A fairly weak pulse this week - not good when renewal decisions are coming up...

Mercy

“We All Saw This Coming” - A particularly apt episode title this week, but I’ll get to that shortly.

It’s a night shift at Mercy Hospital and our nursing crew has a twenty-five dollar bet going on whose bladder is biggest. Turns out it’s Chloe, the beer pong champion of Penn State - I always knew Dawn would grow up to do great things. The celebration is cut short when a prison riot lands a slew of convicted PotW in Chloe and Angel’s ER while the overflow goes to the ICU, where Veronica and Sonia are stationed. Chris, as well as Drs Harris, Dawson and Jelani (K.K. Moggie, who is a recurring character, but hasn’t shown up for a few episodes) are called in. Looks like that’s everybody.

So, good things: Angel gets some much needed character development this week and Sonia edges a little closer to prison. Angel’s always held the short end of the development stick, despite being played by the perfectly capable character actor Guillermo Diaz. This week, we get to know a little about his past including his passing knowledge of neighborhood gangs and that he lost his virginity to a girl after prom. Still missing are any details about his present, aside from his orientation and state of employment. Maybe if they get a second season, they’ll get to that.

Speaking of second season what-ifs and maybes, Sonia appears to be totally fucked. The investigation into her complicity and assistance in Lauren’s death is progressing and she faces ten years in prison. Having told no one, her anxiety is noticeable to those close to her, but she still won’t open up. Now, will they deus ex machina her out of what appears to be a pretty predictable development? To do so would be pretty predictable in and of itself, so it’s kind of interesting to watch how this is unfolding. If they do prosecute her, I guess that’ll be her second season plot, for a while anyway.

Chloe, though, that’s the part I really saw coming. Footballer-boyfriend-guy Andy is blacking out and having memory problems and calling his nurse girlfriend all panicked and frail. This dude’s a goner. I wonder if they told him that ahead of time when he got the part: “Yeah, you’re perfect for the role! Oh, by the way, your character’s gonna have an aneurism and die in the season finale so next fall we can have Chloe get with Dr Dawson.” She hates that guy, but there’s something between them, and not just her semi-involvement with his mob ties. I’m shipping Chloe/Harris, though, especially after tonight’s admission of attraction to the newly beardless physician.

Last but not least, Veronica gets served her divorce papers this week. The guy shows up at one in the morning to deliver them? Seriously? Anyway, she thinks Mike set it up just to be spiteful, even though she’s not seeing Chris anymore. Turns out he’s not totally over her and hearing that she’s single gives him the gumption to suggest they get back together after her stressful night and a tense conversation with Chris over his ability to go on normally after experiencing the same war. Interestingly, he thinks it should happen after they get divorced, to really start over fresh. Veronica is skeptical, but not opposed to the idea.

"I’m kind of on the fence about this show - I like it, but I don’t know how much to invest in it since it still hasn’t been renewed and each episode gets a few hundred thousand less viewers than the last"

That was about it. There was some disposable drama with the PotW, but nothing really notable. Some decent narrative inertia, but nothing special. I’m kind of on the fence about this show - I like it, but I don’t know how much to invest in it since it still hasn’t been renewed and each episode gets a few hundred thousand less viewers than the last. Here’s hoping the season at least goes out with a bang in a couple weeks, just in case it winds up the series finale as well.

Line of the Show

Veronica - I know, that’s so weird, that guy is like, Harris’ cute avatar.

Chloe - I would totally do Cute Harris.

Angel - Are you guys high? That is Harris, he shaved just his beard.

Veronica - Oh my god, we were all just eye-raping Harris.
