Buck Rogers for 3D movie with Paul W. S. Anderson

Biddi biddi biddi. Antique space hero hits the third dimension...
Deadline New York have the scoop that 30s space-opera hero (and 70s disco spandex reboot) Buck Rogers is to swoop towards us in 3D, courtesy of Resident Evil / Event Horizon maestro Paul W. S. Anderson.
Buck Rogers describes the antics of a fighter pilot (in the 1970s TV series, a NASA astronaut) who falls into suspended animation and wakes up in the 25th century, almost immediately joining the military corps of the day (I guess interceptor controls don't change much in 500 years). Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway are penning the script, and the Buck Rogers property is controlled by Paradox, who are behind the Conan remake.
Question is really, which franchise are they rebooting? We'll put up an interview shortly with one of the 1970s top sci-fi sex-symbols from Buck Rogers In The 25th Century (US TV, 1979-81), Erin Gray. Gray played Wilma Deering, the head of the fighter fleet that Buck joins up with after his nap.
So does Anderson intend to leverage the spandex (surely not the disco) aspect of the series or the derring-do of the original strips and 1930s serials with Buster Crabbe? We'll have to wait and see what makes planetfall...
