The worst DVD commentary of all time

Be bored. Be very bored...

Father Karras descends some stairs. After that he will probably do something else.

Let me first say that while I do not admire all of Billy Friedkin's career, I am a huge fan of The French Connection and The Exorcist. Friedkin provided excellent commentaries for both these movies in their original special editions. He's a little bit full of himself sometimes, but he knows more about movies - and making movies - than you or I ever will. He has some good stories to tell, in addition to providing insights into his working methods as the director of these ground-breaking classics.

And then Warner Brothers decided to go to the infernal trough again by releasing The Exorcist: The Version You've Never Seen.

This contains a small amount of footage excised from the original, and makes interesting viewing for fans who know The Exorcist, er, backwards.

Trouble is, Warners apparently didn't think that The Version You've Never Seen was quite different enough from the previous 'special edition' to really get the pea-soup boiling again, and (as far as I can tell) insisted that Friedkin record a new commentary.

Much as the director liked to fire shotguns on the set of The Exorcist in order to evoke genuine reactions of fear and shock from his actors, someone must have pointed one at Friedkin in order to get this second commentary on tape. It is, without doubt, the worst commentary ever. Friedkin does nothing for the entire two-hour runtime of the movie but describe what's happening on screen. Here (if it hasn't been taken down yet) are some of the VERY JUICIEST pieces of the director's stream-of-consciousness on his horror masterpiece in the audio commentary for TVYNS...
