Overboard again

NEWS - MOVIE NEWS

One of the best semi-sung comedies of the 1980s comes our way again...

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn in Overboard

The good news: someone in Hollywood recognises that Gary Marshall's 1987 Goldie Hawn/Kurt Russell outing Overboard is one of the shining comedic gems that slipped between the cracks of the 1980s. The bad news: the tribute comes in the form of a remake.

Katherine Heigl is rumoured to take up the Goldie Hawn role of a rich girl who hires and screws over a carpenter (played by Kurt Russell in the original) only to lose her memory in a boating accident. When the single father realises what has happened, he opportunistically decides to get his revenge by convincing her that she is the wife and mother of his brood of unruly brats, living a hick and low-budget lifestyle out at his shack.

Those who have commented on the film having some dodgy feminist/rape issues might do well to refresh their memories with a rental. Overboard was made in the 1980s, not the 1890s, and Mr. Russell (although acting irresponsibly at best) doesn't take nocturnal advantage of his confused guest in the movie.

Cinematical's guess that Gerard Butler is likely to be sought for a re-team with Heigl after the thematically similar The Ugly Truth is probably a good call, in my opinion. Accepted's Bill Collage and Adam Cooper are writing the remake.
